Time Running Out for

Technology Award Nominations

Proud of your district's technology program? Then submit your applications for the 1997 Technology Awards. But you'll have to hurry: January 10 marks the deadline for application. The awards recognize innovative and effective uses of technology by districts, schools and individuals in the West 40 region. Awards will be presented at the seventeenth annual Role of Technology conference in February of 1997.

In mid-December, all West 40 school districts received a letter with application guidelines, selection criteria and a Technology Awards application form. West 40 encourages school districts to participate in this important recognition program.

Update: Dial-Up Access for Educators

The last issue of "Westwinds" featured the ISBE's publication "Linc-On," which describes the ISBE's efforts to bring the Internet to Illinois Schools and to Illinois educators. "Linc-On" recommends that Chicago area educators purchase dial-up services from Argonne National Laboratory's Educational Network Consortium (ENC).

West 40 strongly recommends educators enroll in a "Connection Class."

This class, in addition to being available through Argonne, is also available at West 40. Several districts also have had their teachers "Argonne" trained and offer the program to their own staffs. In the "Connection Class," participants learn to set up their own system to dial up ENC sites and to use popular Internet tools, such as Netscape and Eudora. It guarantees participants will have working connections by the course's end. Instructors provide valuable phone tech support for class participants

for ninety days following the course.

For experienced telecommunicators who know their equipment and modem connections, unsupported ENC accounts are now available. There are no training sessions to attend or pay for. The unsupported accounts are available at the regular ENC rate of $50.

The current year ends June 30, 1997. The ENC system provides a number of dial-up sites throughout the

Chicagoland area so that the opportunity of finding one within your local calling distance is excellent. Call West 40 at 708/447-6070 to receive the necessary forms.

West 40's Technology/ Math Consultant Gerry Zeller emphasized, "The ISBE is supporting this effort. It has provided considerable dollars to solve past problems by increasing the number of ENC sites, improving existing ones, and providing backup equipment."
