SUPPORTING SOCIAL EMOTIONAL GROWTH THROUGH ARTS AND ACTIVITIES

Advocating for students means supporting them at school and providing a listening ear. It’s also about organizing activities to keep students engaged and smiling. Each year, West40 advocate Lizet Flores introduces fun and creative projects to her 4th and 5th graders at Melrose Park Elementary.

Advocate Lizet Flores with her 4th and 5th graders at Melrose Park Elementary in Spring 2023. West40 provided caterpillars to our partnering schools at District 89. After caring for them and learning about their growth cycles, the students released the butterflies.

Mrs. Flores has a tradition where she makes end of the year gifts for her students who are transitioning into Middle School. At the end of the 2022-23 school year, she had her students work together and make their own tie dyed t-shirts.

Mrs. Flores and her students also worked on a group SEL activity where students made their own stress balls using balloons, flour and rice.
