“A shining example.” “A diligent worker.” “Extraordinarily ambitious.”
These are among the many praises heaped upon young recipients of the 30th Annual School Citizen of the Year (SCOTY) Awards, organized by West40 and held on March 19 at West Leyden High School.

West40 recognized 142 students from across West Cook County school districts for demonstrating exceptional character in their everyday actions. While academic achievement and participation in activities are considered, they represent only a small part of the selection process. Each school develops its own criteria to guide nominations, focusing on qualities such as leadership, responsibility, and respect for others.
Using these criteria, principals and staff select one student each year to receive the SCOTY Award. Recipients included students from elementary through high school.

Recognized students received a certificate, a SCOTY medal, a SCOTY water bottle, and a treat bag that included cupcakes made by the West Leyden High School Culinary Department.
The Leyden Jazz Band provided entertainment prior to the start of the program.
West40 would like to recognize and thank Leyden High School District 212 for its continued support in providing a location for the SCOTY Awards.
