Updated: 1 hour ago

West40 helped arrange for the gift of a good night’s sleep for more than thirty families from across West Cook County on Monday, thanks to a generous donation.

On a blistering cold day outside, residents selected from more than one hundred new mattresses, as well as pillows, bed frames and more inside the St. Joseph gymnasium.

Leslie from Berwyn said she learned about the free mattresses from the Heart 2 Heart Food Mart.

“We were in need of them and with the holidays coming it’s been a tight budget, so we’re happy that we can go ahead and get a free mattress today,” Santos said.

Phoenix Rising Staging of Chicago donated the mattresses and furniture, which was delivered in two truck loads.

“I’m super excited about this. To be able to give families a mattress and bed because that has been something they’ve asked for and we’ve been very fortunate to have Mattress Firm as one of our partners, but to get this quantity and be able to say ‘take two’ or take decorative pillows, bed pillows, sheets, all this came from there. This is pretty amazing,” said Pam Vujovich, West40’s Heart 2 Heart Coordinator.

Vujovich credits Chi Care for connecting West40 to Phoenix Rising Strategies. She said the furniture had never been used except for staging purposes and that any remaining items will be given away at another time.

For Westchester resident Sheila, the new bed came at the right time.

“It means I can replace my old furniture,” Williams said. “Thank you so much.”
